The councillor for safety and mobility on Madrid city council, Pedro Luis Calvo, took part yesterday in the second symposium in the series of talks on Different perspectives for integrated action on road safety organised by the abertis foundation, during which he stated, We are failing because road safety is not yet an obligatory subject, something to which the state ought to be committed.

The director general of traffic, Pere Navarro, stated that Spains objective is to cut the number of deaths in traffic accidents to 50% of the 2001 level by the year 2010. These statements were part of his speech on the first symposium in the series of road safety events organised by the abertis foundation. The second is to be held on 30th September in Madrid.

The results of the 2009 review confirm that abertis has been included, for the fourth consecutive year, in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), and, on a European level, DJSI Stoxx index.

-In June, the Catalan police force, the Mossos dEsquadra, carried out 19 breathalyzer controls during which volunteers from the abertis foundation distributed 774 Club TR3SC cards to drivers aged under 30 who gave a negative result. A draw was made among these drivers for three trips to study English in Ireland.

-The councillor for the Interior, Institutional Relations and Participation, Joan Saura, stresses that While the accident figures for young people are developing relatively well, they are still not acceptable, and that accidents are avoidable.

-According to the theoretical model proposed in the study, with this system airlines could save a total of up to 50,000 euros a day, consuming 24,500 litres less fuel.
-The second prize goes to research comparing different pricing systems on metropolitan roads, taking social welfare into account.
