UNESCOMED present at the 1st meeting of the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves, to be held on 12 May 2022

Maricarmen Romera,

Thematic networks bring together biosphere reserves that share environmental, ecosystemic, geopolitical and cultural similarities. They provide valuable insights into sustainable development models, and the potential for mitigation and adaptation to global change through collaborative research, knowledge transfer and capacity building.

The World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves (WNMBR) was officially launched on 9 December 2021. After a peer consultation process with a wide range of mountain experts and mountain biosphere reserve managers has resulted in a draft roadmap for the implementation of the Network, in line with the Lima Action Plan.

Its governance model is similar to that of the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves. The Network is coordinated by the MAB Secretariat and two technical secretariats hosted in the Valles de Omaña y Luna Biosphere Reserve (Spain) and the Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (People's Republic of China).

The UNESCOMED Center will participate at the 1st meeting of the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves, to be held virtually on Thursday 12 May 2022 from 13:00 to 15:00 (Paris time - CET). The WNMBR call all mountain biosphere reserves and MAB focal points to participate in this first meeting of the Network.
