Winners will have the chance of opting for the III International Prize which will be awarded in Puerto Rico on July 9
The doctoral thesis Statistical and mathematical tools for traffic modelling, by Dr. Aida Calviño Martínez (Civil Engineering School of Santander), has won the XI Abertis Prize for Research on Transport Infrastructure Management awarded by the Abertis-UPC Chair. This award goes to the best doctoral thesis presented in different Spanish universities.
In the shorter dissertation and end of degree or Master’s project category, the prize went ex aequo to Borja Moya Gómez, for his research project entitled Procediments heurístics per l’estimació de matrius O/D a partir d’aforaments and to Manuel Bullejos González, for his work entitled Ajuste temporal de matrices O/D basado en una aproximación del gradiente (Temporary adjustment of O/D matrixes bases on an approach to gradient). This year a special runner’s-up prize was also awarded to Dr. Josep Maria Torné Santos, for his doctoral thesis entitled Active traffic management in metropolitan freeways. Modeling and assessing dynamic speed limit strategies. All three of them study at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyers de Camins, Canals i Ports de Barcelona (School of Civil Engineering of Barcelona).
The prize-giving ceremony held today at the School of Civil Engineering of Barcelona, was attended by the Ministry of Planning and Sustainability, Santi Vila, accompanied by the Chairman of Abertis, Salvador Alemany and the Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC), Enric Fossas. In the ceremony, an emotional farewell was also given to two Directors of the Abertis Group who have recently passed away, Andrea Luminari and Oriol Sitjà.
This competition leads up to the III International Abertis Chair Prize which will be awarded in Puerto Rico on July 9. The winners of the international prize will be chosen from the pool of winning projects from the prize awarded today in the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC) and that of the equivalent prize awarded by the Chaire Abertis- École des Ponts ParisTech -IFFSTAR (Institut Français des Sciences et Technologies des Transports, de l’Aménagement et des Réseaux) on June 17 in Paris, also in the doctoral thesis and dissertation categories.
The Abertis Prize is worth 10,000 euros in prize money in the thesis category and 4,000 euros in the dissertation category.
