abertis was today awarded the first Honos prize by the Catalan Institute for Classical Archaeology (ICAC). With this prize, the ICAC recognises abertis‘ policy of safeguarding the protection of archaeological heritage, fostering on-site research and excavations, promoting studies and collaborating with university and research institutions.

In the context of European Mobility Week, from 16th to 22nd September, the abertis foundation and FESVIAL (the Spanish road safety foundation) organised a study of “drivers and ecological, efficient driving” to find out about the habits of Spanish drivers and how aware and informed this group is of the issues. The research consisted of a survey of 1,575 habitual drivers from all over Spain. The results of the 2010 Review confirm that abertis has retained its listing in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) and also, on a European level, the DJSI Stoxx Index.

The abertis foundation is to set in motion next weekend a campaign to raise awareness among drivers under 30 years old in the Madrid region of the risks involved in driving. Young drivers who give negative results in alcohol checks will be rewarded with the cultural Madrid Card. The scheme, under the slogan “You’ve got one life left. Don’t lose it on the road,” is part of the foundation’s Road Safety Programme and has the support of the Ministry of the Interior, the provincial delegation of the government, the general traffic directorate, Madrid city council, the Red Cross, the Toledo paraplegic Hospital, Microsoft and different companies in the abertis group.

TV3, the abertis foundation and the Catalan government’s education department today presented the “Paisatge i Entorn” (Landscape and Environment) prizes to the winners in the first year of these awards. The award-winning pupils were Guillem Maneja from Manlleu for his sixth-form project on “Les fonts de Manlleu” (The springs of Manlleu), and Laura Puyo, Laura Arias, Tecla Legasa and Helena Cristobal of Tarragona for their ESO project on “Els contenidors i residus especials” (Containers and special waste) at the Santa Teresa de Jesús school.

The boom in commercial tourism in Antarctica, with nearly 50,000 people visiting each year, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), is threatening the ecosystems of Antarctica. As a result, the abertis foundation is organising a scientific conference with a round-table discussion on "The Effects of Tourism in Antarctica", to be held this afternoon (4.30 p.m.) in Barcelona at the Francisco Godia Foundation (Diputación, 250).
