For the second consecutive year, the Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down (Catalan Down Syndrome Foundation), the abertis foundation and the City Council of Barcelona, have signed a collaboration agreement to carry out the "road safety collaborator" project. This project aims to employ young intellectually disabled people while at the same time improving mobility around schools.
By means of this agreement, until June 2013, 8 young people aged 20 – 25 affected by Down syndrome or other intellectually disabled people will work in the vicinity of 4 schools in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi District, carrying out work that will enable them to acquire training and practical experience with the aim of helping them in their future integration in the workplace.
Apart from the two schools that participated last year (Dolors Monserdà and Sagrat Cor-Sarrià schools), this year Lys school and Poeta Foix school have also joined the project.
The work of the road safety collaborator consists in observing and collecting information about the habits of pedestrians and passengers when arriving and leaving school, either on foot or in a vehicle, this information is then studied together with the school and the pupils, with the aim of encouraging good mobility practices.
