The Administration Council of the International Center for the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve (UNESCOMED) has officially approved the Centre’s 2025–2030 Strategy. The session was attended by representatives of the Autonomous National Park Agency (OAPN) of the Government of Spain, the MAB Secretariat of UNESCO and the Abertis Foundation, as well as members of the Scientific Council of the Center, the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves and the Technical Secretariat of the Center itself.
Based on a Mediterranean perspective and driven by a global vision, the new strategy seeks to mark a before and after, positioning the Center as a benchmark in Biosphere Reserves under the motto: “From knowledge to action: building a resilient Mediterranean”.
As a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, UNESCOMED strengthens its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal Agenda, the Paris Climate Change Agreement, the Global Biodiversity Framework and the new Hangzhou Strategic Plan of the MAB Programme.
The strategy is structured in three main axes, aligned with the Centre’s mission to generate knowledge that will enable us to face the challenges of climate change, nature conservation and sustainable socio-economic development in Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves:

Axis 1 – Fostering knowledge-based resilience: It prioritizes applied research in Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves to address key challenges related to climate change adaptation and mitigation, nature conservation and sustainable socio-economic development.
Axis 2 – Empowering for sustainability: It focuses on knowledge transfer and capacity building, both for managers of Biosphere Reserves and administrations and for the general public, promoting good practices and social and environmental awareness.
Axis 3 – Building collective impact: It strengthens the Centre’s visibility, fosters long-term institutional collaborations and coordinates the MedMAB network, maximising the impact of the knowledge generated and strengthening cooperation between Biosphere Reserves.
The strategy is implemented with the support of the Abertis Foundation, whose collaboration guarantees the alignment between the environmental objectives of the Center and the sustainability framework of the Foundation, generating shared value by connecting company, science and communities, and as an example of public-private collaboration.
The 2025–2030 Strategy also includes performance indicators that will allow monitoring progress and ensure that the Centre’s actions generate a tangible and transformative impact.
With the approval of the new strategy, the Centre strengthens its position as a benchmark in knowledge transfer and capacity building, consolidating its role as a catalyst for scientific and sustainable solutions to the current and future challenges of the Mediterranean and other regions with similar challenges.
