The Dana Biosphere Reserve, a jewel from Jordan

Berta Carreño,

The Dana Biosphere Reserve, belonging to the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves Thematic Network (MedMaB), holds immense ecological, cultural, and economic values. Its diverse landscapes, encompassing Mediterranean, Irano-Turanian, and Sudanian biogeographical zones, make it a unique habitat for over 891 plant species, including rare and endemic varieties. This biodiversity is crucial for ecological stability and the preservation of rare species, such as the Syrian Serin and Nubian Ibex. Culturally, the Dana BR is significant for local communities, who have long relied on its resources, and it serves as a model for sustainable development through responsible tourism. Economically, the reserve contributes to job creation and poverty alleviation, enhancing local livelihoods. The UNESCOMED Center talked to its managing team to learn more about their work:

What are the main challenges and joys of your  work in the Biosphere Reserve?

Challenges:

  1. Overgrazing: This threatens the delicate balance of ecosystems and plant regeneration.
  2. Woodcutting: Unsustainable harvesting of trees impacts biodiversity and habitat integrity.
  3. Hunting: Targeted hunting of species like the Ibex disrupts the ecological balance and threatens endangered species.
  4. Climate Change: Changes in climate patterns pose long-term risks to the flora and fauna of the reserve.

Joys:

  1. Biodiversity Conservation: Witnessing the recovery of endangered species and habitats is immensely rewarding.
  2. Community Engagement: Successfully integrating local communities in conservation efforts fosters a sense of ownership and stewardship.
  3. Global Recognition: Receiving awards for effective conservation strategies enhances motivation and raises awareness about the reserve's importance.

What are the advantages of being a member of  the Mediterranean Network of Biosphere Reserves (MedMaB Thematic Network)?

Membership in the MedMaB Thematic Network provides several advantages, including:

  1. Knowledge Exchange: Opportunities to share best practices and experiences with other biosphere reserves across the Mediterranean.
  2. Collaborative Projects: Access to joint initiatives and funding that support conservation and sustainable development efforts.
  3. Enhanced Visibility: Increased awareness and recognition of the reserve, attracting tourists and researchers alike.
  4. Capacity Building: Training and resources that strengthen local management capabilities and conservation strategies.

What is the most meaningful contribution the  RES-MAB project may bring to your Biosphere Reserve?

The RES-MAB project can bring significant contributions to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, including:

  1. Strengthened Conservation Practices: Implementing advanced conservation techniques based on the latest research and global standards, ensuring effective biodiversity protection.
  2. Community Development Programs: Initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources, and promoting resilience among local communities.
  3. Biodiversity Monitoring: Enhanced systems for tracking species and habitat health, leading to informed management decisions and proactive measures to protect vulnerable species.
  4. Educational Outreach: Increased awareness and education efforts for both locals and visitors, fostering a culture of conservation and encouraging sustainable practices.
  5. Resilience Building: Programs designed to enhance the resilience of local ecosystems and communities to environmental changes and economic pressures, ensuring long-term sustainability.

By addressing these aspects, the Dana Biosphere Reserve can continue to thrive as a model of integrated conservation and sustainable development, balancing ecological preservation with the needs of its local communities.
