The abertis foundation promotes forestry improvement and prevention of fires in Foix Park

The president of abertis and the abertis foundation , Salvador Alemany; the president of the Provincial Council of Barcelona, Salvador Esteve and the president of the Foix Park Consortium and Mayor of Castellet i la Gornal, Miguel Delgado, have ratified a collaboration agreement for drawing up, developing and implementing the Integral Plan for forest improvement and fire prevention for Foix Park.

Foix Park is part of a Consortium comprising the Provincial Council of Barcelona, the abertis foundation and the town councils of Castellet i la Gornal and Santa Margarida i els Monjos. In the Park we can find Castellet Castle, headquarters of the abertis foundation and a candidate for becoming a Centre for the UNESCO Centre for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves.

The agreement contemplates forestry work that will be carried out by means of an annual contribution of 20,000 euros by the abertis foundation in the next five years. This support will be especially for areas affected by forest fires and for the prevention of fires in the area managed by the Consortium.
After the presentation, the authorities visited the place known as Fondo de la Garçosa, where on June 12th last year a forest fire started that affected 636,44 hectares, of which 208.25 corresponded to the protected area of Foix Park, in the municipality of Castellet i la Gornal, and 428.19 hectares in the municipality of Vilanova i la Geltrú.

The visit enabled them to see the magnificent natural regeneration that is taking place, as in this area of the Mediterranean region, the pine forests are of pyrophyte type (fire tolerant), and are accustomed to regenerating themselves after fires (artificial reforestation will not be necessary at the moment). For this reason, the work to be done from now on will be focused on conservation, maintenance of the forests in optimum state (forest clearing) and fire prevention.

Actions planned for this first year are: Reforms in safety and maintenance of the Trencarroques watch tower, improvements in the road network, vigilance and fire fighting in the park and signposting of paths, renewal of agricultural equipment, studies of the bird population, work to protect the amphibian population and control of non-indigenous wildlife; as well as carrying out educational seminars about the fauna and collaboration in activities to promote biodiversity.
