In the framework of its International University Campus, UNESCOMED gives a lecture in the International Master Biosphere Reserve Management

Berta Carreño,

Biosphere reserves are model regions for sustainable development. The international master’s programme in Biosphere Reserve Management (BIOM) addresses contemporary sustainability issues from an integrative perspective. Students are invited to think about how to reconcile competing land-use interests at the landscape level. They analyse both innovative and traditional land use practices and compare different management and land use systems. The master’s course is guided by the current strategy of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the Lima Action Plan, focusing on three areas of competence: Ecological and social systems; Governance and management; and Cooperation, communication, and learning.

After its active participation during 2022 in the International Conference “Science and research in, for, and with UNESCO biosphere reserves”, the UNESCOMED Centre continues its close collaboration with the Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) and the Eberswalde School of Sustainable Development (HNEE) in Germany. This time, Dr. Mari-Carmen Romera, coordinator of the UNESCOMED Centre, participated in the Master “Biosphere Reserve Management” (BIOM) giving a lecture on the course “Political, legal and international frameworks for UNESCO biosphere reserves”. Invited by Prof. Dr. Erik Aschenbrand, Dr. Romera presented the Mediterranean Network of Biosphere Reserves (MedMaB) and discussed with students about the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) and the role of other MAB regional and thematic networks like the MedMaB.

Further information of the Master Programme Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM) is available on the webpage of the BRI.
